Kiawah Island is Ranked the Top Tennis Resort Community in the World
Kiawah Island has been ranked number one in the world by Tennisresortsonline.com in May 2010. The source of rankings comes from vacationers who are asked to assess resorts in twenty categories. Those include not only all aspects of the tennis experience but also such diverse off-court characteristics as the quality of lodging, restaurants, children's programs, spa, etc.
During the busy March-to-October season, both clubs offer a weekly menu of programs including instructional clinics, drill sessions, adult and junior singles and doubles round robins, parent-child doubles round robins, and private lessons (from November-February activity slows, to the point that the West Beach club closes for part of December and January). Activity reaches its zenith in summer when the resort adds a weekly pro doubles exhibition at East Beach as well as three-day junior camps, junior tournament tough workouts and a Tiny Tots program. On selected weekends during every month except July and August, the resort adds a 3-day doubles mini camp, which consists of 8 hours of instruction covering all aspects of the game, including basic strokes, strategy, angles, visualization, and supervised doubles play. Participants also receive a copy of Barth's instructional manual, "Tips for Better Tennis." Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s two featured world class Tennis Centers are The West Beach Tennis Club, and the Roy Barth Tennis Center.

North Charleston Boeing 787 Dreamliner Facility Construction on Schedule
The new Boeing Plant’s assembly facility in North Charleston is progressing in accordance with its construction projection and is already boosting the local economy with the issuance of many subcontracts. The new plant will have a footprint of over 1,200,000 square feet and is currently the largest single building under construction in the United States. The building will be large enough to accommodate two 787 Dreamliners side by side.
Currently at the site there are several huge cranes erecting the steel trusses for the plant. This phase of construction is scheduled to be completed in October 2010. Approximately 15,000 tons of steel will be used during this phase of construction. Construction is being done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and the scheduled competition date of the Boeing Plant is May 2011.
The project is also helping boost local economy. BE&K Building Corp. and Turner Construction, the general contractors of the plant, have so far awarded subcontracts worth $220 million. About 45% of the contracts have been awarded to Greenville-based companies. The cost of the total project is pegged at $750 million.
More than 1,200 people have worked on the current plan so far with a daily average of about 350 people on site. With Boeing announcing that it will also build a plant to assemble interiors for the new 787 jetliner in South Carolina, more than 150 new jobs are likely to be created. The interiors plant will be built in a location barely 10 miles away from the assembly plant.

August 2010 National Housing Trends Update
August 2010 Housing Trends Update is derived from the Campbell/Inside Mortgage Finance Monthly Survey of Real Estate Market Conditions. It is based on a national survey of more than 3,000 real estate agents each month and provides up-to-date intelligence on home sales and mortgage usage patterns throughout the United States
Housing Market Continues to See Exodus by First-Time Homebuyers. First-time homebuyers continued to desert the housing market in July, according to the latest Campbell/Inside Mortgage Finance Monthly Survey of Real Estate Market Conditions. First-time homebuyers accounted for only 39.1% of the home purchase market last month, down from a peak of 48.2% as recently as March and the lowest level seen in at least a year.
“The end of the tax credit has clearly had an effect,” stated Thomas Popik, research director for Campbell Surveys. “First-time homebuyer participation is continuing to drop. We expect a further decline in first-time homebuyer activity, perhaps reaching as low as 30-35% of the market by the fall months.”

Downtown Charleston’s Historic Battery Park
Known by the locals as The Battery opened to the public in 1837. Battery Park located at the end of the Charleston Peninsula and runs from the Cooper river to the Ashley river, Battery Park is one of the best places to just sit down on a park bench to relax and soak up what Charleston really is and what Charleston was in the past. At The Battery you can get the Lowcountry waterfront feel at its best with southern Colonial and Antebellum mansions, large live oaks, cannons, cannon balls, palmetto trees, statues, and a fountain, a gazebo along with breathtaking views of the Charleston Harbor, Fort Sumter, Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse, and the USS Yorktown.
Just as all of Downtown Charleston seeps with history, so dose The Battery Park. The Charleston Battery has played a significant roll in the American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. The cannons were placed there during the War of 1812 as a last line of defense for Charleston against the British. Fort Sumter was out of the range of the cannons and they were not used during the attack. During the Civil War evacuation of Charleston the Confederates detonated tons of explosives here to prevent them from falling in to the Union’s hands.
In addition to the wartime history of the Battery, White Point has a history of pirates. Dozens of pirates were hanged from oak trees and gallows in the early 1700s and left dangling from their nooses for days as a deterrent to prevent other pirates from entering Charleston Harbor. Legends abound about sunken treasure just waiting to be discovered in the waters.

Melvin Bessinger’s Barb-B-Que Restaurant at James Island and Mount Pleasant
Melvin Bessinger's Barb-B-Que Restaurants, known simply as “Melvin’s” to the locals, have been a South Carolina Landmark since 1939. We have become famous for the best St. Louis Style Pork Ribs, Chicken and "All Ham" Bar-B-Que in the South. But don't take our word for it, come on down and experience the flavor. We have 2 locations, Mt Pleasant and James Island.
I have eaten at Melvin’s at both the James Island location and the Mount Pleasant location several times with both friends and clients. The selections are vast, the food is excellent and the service is fast, even at the busiest times, and the prices are very reasonable. Melvin’s is an excellent choice for both the local residents and visitors of Charleston, Mount Pleasant, and James Island.
Melvin Bessinger’s Barb-B-Que features its pork bar-b-que, ribs, chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, oysters, frogmore stew and much more. Melvin Bessinger’s Bar-B-Que will cater all or your events and ship any bar-b-que sauces by mail. For additional information visit Melvin Bessinger’s Bar-B-Que.
