2011 Sweetgrass Festival at The Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park

The highly anticipated 2011Sweetgrass Festival at Mount Pleasant’s Waterfront Memorial Park on June 4th will celebrate the rich Gullah Geechee cultural heritage and provides the most extensive showcase of sweetgrass baskets in the Lowcountry area.

This year's event features an assortment of unique handmade arts & crafts, paintings, live performances, and documentary films. Festival-goers will enjoy a day filled with entertainment that includes gospel songs and praise dance, storytelling and Gullah Geechee skits, basket-making demonstrations and the Adande African Drummers and Dancers. Visitors will be treated to a variety of authentic Gullah cuisine, classic barbeque, fish, chicken and beverages offered for sale by more than 15 Lowcountry restaurants and food vendors. Children and adults will enjoy family friendly activities including a waterslide.  Publications on Lowcountry Gullah Geechee history, fiction, and cookbooks will be available for sale as well.

Admission and parking are free. The festival is a family event and no alcohol is sold. Animals, skateboards, and bicycles are not allowed.

The 2011 Sweetgrass Festival will be at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Memorial Park Saturday June 4th from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  Admission is FREE.  Waterfront Memorial Park is located at 99 Harry Hallman Jr. Blvd, under the Arthur Ravenel Bridge.  Mount Pleasant Waterfront park is approximately 5 minutes from Downtown Charleston.

2011 Piccolo Spoleto Outdoors Craft Show May 27th – May 29th and June 3rd – 5th

Presented by Charleston Crafts, brings more than 130 artists and artisans from across the U.S. to present artwork in various media.  There will be artist demonstrations at each show.

The location is at Wragg Square Park near the corner of Meeting Street and Charlotte Street in the Wraggborough neighborhood of Historic Downtown Charleston.  The Piccolo Spoleto Craft Show will be held Friday thorough Sunday the first tw0 weekend of the Spoleto Festival.  The hours are Friday and Saturday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

2011 Charleston Piccolo Spoleto Festival May 27th through June 12th

Tickets are now on sale for the 33rd annual Piccolo Spoleto Festival, the official outreach arm of Spoleto Festival USA. Piccolo Spoleto opens on Friday, May 27 and runs for 17 days until Sunday, June 12, 2011 and offers a variety of arts and cultural programs including theatre, blues, jazz, chamber music, early music, dance, literary, visual arts as well as many admission-free and family-friendly events.

Produced and directed by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs since 1979, Piccolo Spoleto’s mission is to provide access to the Spoleto Festival USA experience for everyone, regardless of their economic, social or physical circumstances and to provide the opportunity for excellent local and regional artists, writers and performers to be showcased in the Piccolo Spoleto Festival venues. Highlights of this year’s admission-free events, produced by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs include:

SUNSET SERENADE—this annual pops concert features the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival Orchestra, conducted by Donald Portnoy, playing works made famous in New York and Hollywood, including West Side Story, Schlinder’s List and more. The centerpiece of the program is the Charleston Ballet Theatre, choreographed by Jill Eathorne Bahr, performing Wings (music by Ernest Bloch) and The Lark Ascending (music by Vaughan Williams). PICCOLO SPOLETO CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL—featuring One World, Many Stories, children of all ages delight in varied live entertainment, face painting, crafts and more! Presented in cooperation with the Charleston County Public Library. Marion Square. May 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

 PICCOLO SPOLETO BLOCK PARTY: THE SUMMER FRENZY!—Kick-off the summer with a night full of music, dancing, and good eats. Entertainment ranges from local bands battling it out, dance performances by Dancefx and Mufuka Works Dance Company and a DJ mixin’ up tunes from the 60’s to today’s hottest hits. Marion Square.
